Enabling access and exploration of the online digital archive of the regional emigrants’ committee, and enabling curated research lines within the archive.
Goal of the project, as defined in the tender call, is to enable and improve the accessibility of theRegional government’s digital archive about regional emigrants, and to enhance the usability of the archive as a source of socio-historical research material.
Main challenges were: build an appealing identity and image for the archive, in order to improve online circulation; allow academic categorization structure, and enable advanced researches within the catalogue; allow different paths of exploration for different users (curious citizens and professional researchers).
Visual identity guide: we decided to adopt a strong and opinionated visual style, focusing on the themes of: movement, liveliness, abrupt change, contrast – all related to the main subject of the archive: emigration.
Navigation: the homepage provides all the possible navigation routes available, in horizontal stripes differentiated both by visuals and text, while at the same time conveying the look and feel and creating the visual cover. Mobile navigation follows the same logic and visual organization. The map works both as a localization interface, and as a content exploration space, in which the migration journey linked to each of the archive’s documents is highlighted.
Different levels of deepening in the subject are allowed, and one easier point of access is provided to help engage the less motivated users: ther curated collections. The featured collections are curated by the relevant Regional staff, but general users also have the opportunity to create their own curated collections and share them with their circles.
Also, a community area is provided, with the goal of reconnecting distant migrants or exchange stories and opinions about the content of the archive.
